Zeitgeist

Zeitgeist is a light sculpture that transforms the German word into a meditation on time, memory, and the intangible forces that shape the present. While Zeitgeist is commonly understood as the defining spirit of an era, its literal meaning—Zeit (time) and Geist (spirit or ghost)—reveals a more poetic interpretation.

The sculpture emphasizes this duality through light. The word Zeit remains continuously illuminated, symbolizing the constant and irreversible flow of time. In contrast, Geist flickers rhythmically, disappearing and reappearing in a pattern reminiscent of a heartbeat. This pulsating light evokes the elusive nature of memory, ideas, and the "spirit" of an age—never fixed, always shifting between presence and absence.

Widely adopted beyond the German language, Zeitgeist has become an international term for describing the character of a historical moment. By separating and animating its two components, the work invites viewers to reflect on whether the spirit of an era is something we can truly perceive while living through it, or only recognize once it has begun to fade.
